According to a report from Klamm on July 29th, Burkhard Blienert, Germany's federal drug policy commissioner, has called for further restrictions on smoking behavior in the country. According to the Social Democratic Party politician, it is unacceptable to still see colorful tobacco and disposable vape advertising at gas stations or supermarket checkouts by 2024. As early as the 2021 coalition agreement, the red-green party had reached stricter rules on the marketing and sponsorship of nicotine products.
Blienert pointed out that smoking is the cause of over 200 different diseases and causes an annual economic loss of nearly 100 billion euros. He said he doesn't want to parent smokers, but advertising is tempting, especially for young people. Therefore, he calls for stricter supervision of supermarkets and gas stations.
He also calls for a rapid limitation of disposable vape sales. Health organizations also demand the ban of tobacco and disposable vape sales in supermarkets and gas stations, and only allowing sales in licensed outlets with uniform packaging without recognizable brands.
The German Tobacco Industry and New Products Federal Association pointed out that advertising opportunities have already been restricted, such as banning vape posters since the beginning of the year. Blienert calls for urgent and serious attention to this issue: cancel advertising, no more sponsorship, ban disposable vapes, more consistent protection for non-smokers, especially children, and increase tobacco taxes.
In conclusion, Blienert's proposals aim to create a healthier and safer environment in Germany, which should be actively promoted and supported.
